about

While finalising their much-anticipated follow up to 2016’s Shōtotsu, Kurushimi have resurfaced with the second installement in their ‘kikan’ (return) series, where they revisit and dramatically reinterpret pieces from their past.

This time, Kurushimi re-work 'In A Grove’, a favourite among many fans from their acclaimed self-titled debut. Here, the original track’s elements are reinterpreted into new sounds that are still grounded in the original’s narrative based on the short story ‘Yabu no Naka’.

‘Yabu no Naka’ (In a Grove) is a short story by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa from 1922. It presents three varying accounts of the murder of a samurai whose corpse has been found in a bamboo forest. Each section simultaneously clarifies and obfuscates what the reader knows about the murder, eventually creating a complex and contradictory vision of events. You can read the story here: archive.org/details/RynosukeAkutagawaInaGrove

The track sees Kurushimi’s intense mix of free-jazz, grindcore and deconstructionist noise return alongside elements of ambient drone and minimalist, avant-garde electronics.

Like the first EP, it includes a powerful live set, but also includes a completely new and exclusive studio track. Perhaps a hint of what we might expect on their next full-length?

‘Return II: The Grove’ is another impressive achievement from the Sydney ensemble that keeps demonstrating exceptional creativity with each release, calling to mind works by Ikue Mori, Bill Laswell, Massacre, Brian Eno as well as early Napalm Death.
